Question:

Aslam alaikom shiekh

Have all of the minor sign of qiyamah passed and are there only major signs left? Or are there minor signs that are left as well ?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The ʿulamāʾ (scholars) have categorized the signs of Qiyāmah in different ways. In al-Ishāʿah li Ashrāṭ al-Sāʿah, Imām Barzanjī rahimahullah has divided them into three categories:

  1. Those signs that have already occurred
  2. Those signs that are still occurring
  3. Those signs that have not yet occurred

Categories 1 and 3 refer to extraordinary events, whereas category 2 refers to societal trends that have or will emerge and continue to proliferate alongside the events in category 3.[1]

Signs That Have Already Occurred

Some examples include:

  • The death of Rasūlullāh ﷺ
  • The murder of ʿUmar ra
  • The murder of ʿUthmān ra
  • Civil wars amongst the Ṣaḥābah ra
  • The martyrdom of Ḥusayn ra
  • Many of Madīnah’s inhabitants leaving it
  • The conquest of Jerusalem
  • A huge fire starting in the Ḥijāz
  • The emergence of false prophets

Signs that Are Still Occurring

Some examples include:

  • Unqualified, disgraceful, hypocritical leadership
  • Extreme difficulty in holding on to dīn
  • Competing in decorating masājid
  • Widespread lust
  • Severing of family ties
  • Lost of trust
  • Increase of sudden deaths
  • Many worshippers but few scholars
  • Death of the pious
  • Abundance of rain but shortage of crops
  • Spread of homosexuality
  • Increase of music
  • Increase in alcohol consumption
  • Loss of respect for elders and lack of compassion for youngsters

Signs that Have Not Yet Occurred

  • Imām Mahdī rh
  • Dajjāl’s appearance
  • The return of ʿĪsā as
  • Yajūj and Majūj
  • The sun rising from the west
  • The Beast
  • The smoke
  • The Earth opening up and swallowing three times
  • A fire emerging from Yemen that will drive people towards the plain where the Day of Judgment will take place.[2]

Another categorization is done by the Yemeni scholar Shaykh Abū Bakr al-ʿAdanī al-Mashhūr rh in Nubdhah al-Nubdhah. He states that there are three categories:

  1. Minor Signs: Various trends that have begun even before Rasūlullāh ﷺ and will continue on alongside the intermediate and major signs until the Day of Judgment.
  2. Intermediate Signs: Signs that began with the Rasūlullāh ﷺ’s call to the people and ending with the beginning of the major signs.
  3. Major Signs: Begin with the emergence of Imām Mahdī rh and will continue until the blowing of the horn.

Regardless of how one categorizes the signs, we see that many of the trends mentioned in the aḥādīth have emerged and are pervasive, and several of the extraordinary events have also occurred.

The most important thing for us as Muslims is to be prepared to meet Allāh by being steadfast in His obedience. It is possible that we may see the major signs such as Imām Mahdī rh and all of the turbulence that will accompany them. It is also possible that we will die before them which, in effect, would be the beginning of our Qiyāmah.

May Allāh allow us to be prepared to please Him in all conditions.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
