Can one ask that they be buried with their ijazah certificate?

Question:

Are we allowed to be buried with any form of possession? By way of example, can one ask that they be buried with their ijazah certificate?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

At the outset, it should be mentioned that there is nothing specific established about burying additional items aside from the deceased’s body.

Fuqahāʾ have discussed placing items for the purpose of seeking barakah from them. For example, placing Qurʾan along with the deceased, or placing piece of Kaʿba’s cloth or writing upon the Kafn with some duʿāʾ. In all such cases, without going in details, any action which brings disrespect towards Qurʾānic text or name of Allah will not be permissible.

Hence it is not permissible to put Qurʾān, or its text, or any tablet or kaʿba cloth with Qurʾānic writing on it in the grave. But if a piece of cloth from kaʿba which does not have any qurʾānic writing on it is placed therein, then it will be permissible.

Any sanad or similar document with any of the name of Allah, Qurʾānic text or anything which has a potential of being disrespected will also not be permissible to bury along with deceased either.

Simplicity must be adopted in this life, and in the way we leave it as well. The achievements of this world, such as one’s sanad or ijāza, are for sake of Allah. Allah does not require such reminders. The intent of one’s struggle is duly recorded by Allah, and comfort, contentment and proximity with Allah is all written by Allah.

وقد أفتى ابن الصلاح بأنه لا يجوز أن يكتب على الكفن يس والكهف ونحوهما خوفا من صديد الميت والقياس المذكور ممنوع لأن القصد ثم التمييز وهنا التبرك، فالأسماء المعظمة باقية على حالها فلا يجوز تعريضها للنجاسة، والقول بأنه يطلب فعله مردود لأن مثل ذلك لا يحتج به إلا إذا صح عن النبي – صلى الله عليه وسلم – طلب ذلك وليس كذلك اهـ وقدمنا قبيل باب المياه عن الفتح أنه تكره كتابة القرآن وأسماء الله – تعالى – على الدراهم والمحاريب والجدران وما يفرش، وما ذاك إلا لاحترامه، وخشية وطئه ونحوه مما فيه إهانة فالمنع هنا بالأولى ما لم يثبت عن المجتهد أو ينقل فيه حديث ثابت فتأمل، نعم نقل بعض المحشين عن فوائد الشرجي أن مما يكتب على جبهة الميت بغير مداد بالأصبع المسبحة – بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم – وعلى الصدر لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله، وذلك بعد الغسل قبل التكفين
