Question:

My fiancée has asked for ‘Teaching her Quran with meaning to the best of my ability’ as Mahr. Is it allowed?
I know the hadith where a companion of prophet salallahu alayhi wasallam was allowed to marry with Quran as Mahr. Was that because he did not have money?
If I have money, but still my fiancée wants Quran as Mahr, will that be allowed?
Her logic is that Mahr is for her security and safety, what can be better security and safety than Quran?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

According to Hanafiyyah such a mahr which is not “wealth” is not permissible. A Mahr must be from wealth (al maal). The minimum requirement of mahr according to hanafiyyah is 10 dirhams.

Allah says in the Qur’an,

وأحل لكم ما وراء ذلكم أن تبتغوا بأموالكم

Aside from these, all others are lawful, provided you take (them in marriage)
with your wealth/property/possession (4:24)

For more detail on mahr please refer to: Could you please explain the procedure to determine the Mahr for marriage.

While you cannot set teaching of Qur’an as a mahr for her marriage, you can promise to teach her over and above your mahr.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
