Question:

I want to quit hashish smoking because it is forbidden in Islam, but some scholars have allowed its usage for medical purposes. I don’t get any pleasure in sex without hashish. Especially when I ejaculate there comes no pleasure at all, but when I use hashish, I get satisfied with sexual activity. Can I term it as a medical condition and use it only before sex? Moreover, I don’t get high at all, and no one has ever noticed me in a condition where he or she can judge whether I am high or out of my senses. I remain normal and calm. Is it still haram when it’s not altering my mind apart from just a little mood elevation?

As salāmu `alaykum wa rahmatullāhi wa barakātuh.

You ask about the permissibility of hashish for the purpose of enhancing sexual activity. In the absence of intoxication hashish is still impermissible, except when a genuine medical need exists with the following conditions:

1. a viable or equally efficacious ḥalāl alternative is not available
2. benefit is likely
3. intoxication or greater harm are not expected[1]

The use of hashish as a sexual aid remains subjective, poorly studied, and conflicting. Although some have reported benefits in using hashish as a sexual aid, other evidence indicates a possible detrimental effect on male fertility and an increase in sexual dysfunction.[2] Hence, no definite medical conclusion can be made about its benefit and potential harm may exist.

Currently, there are many halal modalities for the treatment of sexual dysfunctions including medications and therapy which eliminate the need for hashish. Hence, hashish may not be used as a sexual aid in this circumstance. We advise you to discuss your condition with a pious and knowledgeable Muslim physician or therapist to explore other options.

أقول: هذا غير ظاهر، لأن ما يخل العقل لا يجوز أيضا بلا شبهة فكيف يقال إنه مباح: بل الصواب أن مراد صاحب الهداية وغيره إباحة قليله للتداوي ونحوه ومن صرح بحرمته أراد به القدر المسكر منه، يدل عليه ما في غاية البيان عن شرح شيخ الإسلام: أكل قليل السقمونيا والبنج مباح للتداوي، ما زاد على ذلك إذا كان يقتل أو يذهب العقل حرام اهـ فهذا صريح فيما قلناه مؤيد لما سبق بحثناه من تخصيص ما مر من أن ما أسكر كثيره حرم قليله بالمائعات، وهكذا يقول في غيره من الأشياء الجامدة المضرة في العقل أو غيره، يحرم تناول القدر المضر منها دون القليل النافع، لأن حرمتها ليست لعينها بل لضررها.
