Question:

My question is regarding to doing a job in medical billing company (Us or Canadian based) where you are the third party between the Healthcare providers and insurance company.

Our duties include creating and sending claims on behalf of the provider to insurances, posting the payment into the Billing software and taking actions on claims on which we didn’t receive payment.

We also communicate with the insurance companies in order to find out the solutions of denied claims. Also some times the Billing company assign different names to the employees like Bilal (Bryan etc).

My salary come from the billing company which is fixed per month. Is my salary Halal?

Answer:

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

When considering the permissibility of income, two things are taken into consideration:

1. The permissibility of the work being performed.

2. The source of the employer’s income

If the work being performed is permissible and the majority of the employer’s income is from ḥalāl sources, the income earned from the job ḥalāl.[1]

Based on your description, the job entails seeking payment from insurance companies on behalf of health care providers for medical services rendered. Simply seeking and recording payment for services is a procedural matter that has nothing to do with the aspects of interest and gambling within the insurance industry.[2] The main source of income for the billing company seems to be from healthcare providers, which is a ḥalāl source of income.

The fact that the employer sometimes assigns Muslims non-Muslim names has no bearing on the status of the income, but it is demeaning and against the self-respect of a Muslim. One should politely assert themselves and request that they be called by their actual name.

Taking these points into consideration, we conclude that the work being performed is permissible and the majority of the employer’s income is from ḥalāl sources. Therefore, the salary earned from the job is ḥalāl.

And Allāh Taʿālā Knows Best
