I am running a pizza franchise and sometime we use pork food items in making pizza. Is such a business permissible?

Question:

I am running a franchise pizza business in Canada; and sometime we use pork food items in making pizza. I am wondering if this business is Halal or Haram for me even I don’t sell it to muslims?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle sale of any item, which is not considered “wealth” according to Shariah, is impermissible. Examples of these items include things like wine, pork and haram food etc. Hence, selling of Pizza and other products containing pork is not permissible and income from such a sale will be impermissible as well. This ruling is regardless of who you sell these products to.¹

We advise you to have negotiations with the franchise owner to allow you to revise the menu for your store in order to reflect only halal entries. If this is not possible, then we advise you to look for an alternative mode of business for yourself.

May Allah Ta’ala make halal sustenance easy for you, Ameen.
