Question:
When someone says As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatu llāhi wa-barakātuhu to you, are you required to reply with Wa-‘alaykumu s-salāmu wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuhu (as it is stated in Surah al-Nisā’ to reply with equal or greater), or is it permissible to suffice with Wa-‘alaykumu s-salām?
Answer:
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
Imam Aḥmad rh and others narrate that once, a man came to Rasūlullāh ﷺ and said As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. Rasūlullāh ﷺ responded with wa-‘alaykum al-salām (the entire context can be found in the footnote).[1]
From this, we learn that the obligation of responding to as-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh is fulfilled if one suffices with wa-‘alaykum al-salām. However, it is preferable to respond in kind with the complete wa-‘alaykum al-salām wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuhu.[2]

Verse 4:86 of the Holy Qur’an which says: ‘And when you are greeted with a salutation, greet with one better than it, or return the same’, was explained by the Rasūlullāh ﷺ through his own action in the following manner.
Once someone came to the Rasūlullāh ﷺ and said: ‘As-Salamu ‘Alaikum Ya Rasulallah‘. While returning the greeting, he added a word and said: ‘Wa ‘Alaikumus-Salam wa Rahmatullah (And peace be on you, and the mercy of Allah).
Then someone else came and offered his salam using the following words: ‘As-Salamu Alaika Ya Rasulallah wa Rahmatullah. ‘In response, he added yet another word and said: ‘Wa Alaikumus-Salam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
Then came a third person. He combined all three salutations in his initial salam and greeted him by saying the whole thing, that is: As-Salamu Alaik Ya Rasulallah wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.’ In response, the Rasūlullāh ﷺ. said only one word ‘Wa Alaik’ (and on you).
Disappointed in his heart, he said: ‘Ya Rasulallah, ransomed be my parents for you, you said many words of prayer while returning the greeting of those who came before me. But, when I greeted you with all those words, you limited your response to ‘wa ‘alaik’ (and on you).’
He said: ‘You left nothing for me to add in the response! Since you used up all those words in your initial salam, I found it sufficient to return your greeting on the principle of like for like in accordance with the teaching of the Qur’an.’ This narration has been reported by Ibn Jarir and Ibn Abi Hatim with different chains of authorities.

الواجب في جواب السلام رد مثلها : مسئلة : الواجب في جواب السلام رد مثلها ، لأنه أدنى الأمرين ، و يستحب الرد بأحسن منها بزيادة الرحمة و البركة ، وكلما زاد في السلام أو في الجواب كان أكثر ثواباً و أفضل ، كما ثبت عن عمران بن حصين عند الترمذي و أبى داود ، و عن معاذ بن أنس عند أبي داود : أن رجلا أتى رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم فقال : السلام عليكم و رحمة الله وبر و برکاته و مغفرته . فقال صلى الله عليه و سلم : أربعون ، هكذا يكون الفضائل » . و ذكر البغوي أن رجلا سلم على ابن عباس فقال : السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته ثم زاد شيئاً آخر ، فقال ابن عباس : إن السلام انتهى إلى البركة . كما في المظهري أيضاً ( ۲ : ۷۳ ) . و فيه دليل على نفى زيادة المغفرة في السلام ، و لا يكره في الجواب لما مر في حديث معاذ بن أنس.
و روى أحمد في الزهد ، و ابن أبي حاتم والطبراني في الكبير ، و ابن مردويه من حديث سلمان الفارسي « أن رجلا قال لرسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم : السلام عليك ، فقال : وعليك السلام و رحمة الله و بركاته . و قال آخر : السلام عليك ورحمة الله و بركاته ، فقال : وعليك السلام . قال الرجل : نقصتني ، فأين ما قال الله تعالى – وتلا الآية – ؟ فقال : إنك لم تترك لى فضلا فرددت عليك مثله » كذا فى المظهري ( ۲ : ۱۷۵ ) . و فيه أن جواب السلام أيضاً انتهى إلى البركة ، كما قال ابن عباس ، و الله تعالى أعلم . و في حديث سلمان دلالة على أن قوله : و عليك السلام يكفي في جواب من قال : السلام عليك ورحمة الله وبركاته . إما لأن الماثلة في نفس السلام يكفى ، وإما لأن اللام في قوله : وعليك السلام للعهد ، فتضمن في الجواب ما كان مذكوراً في كلام البادي بالسلام من الرحمة والبركة ، قاله المظهرى

تیسری بات حدیث مذکور سے یہ معلوم ہوئی کہ سلام میں تین کلمے کہنے والے کے جواب میں اگر صرف ایک کلمہ ہیں کہہ دیا جائے تو وہ بھی اداء بالمثل کے حکم میں حکم قرآنی: أو ردوها کی تعمیل کے لئے کافی ہے، جیسا کہ اس حدیث میں آنحضرت صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے صرف ایک کلمہ پر اکتف فر مایا ہے۔ (تفسیر مظہری)
